In recognition of this occasion - and I love recognizing "the moon" in all its glory - our yoga class today had several moon references.

We open our class with gentle breathing exercises. Today we began by imagining a pristine lake reflecting the rise of the moon as we inhale. Then, with Michael Buble singing "Moondance" in the background, we completed a seated version of "moon series" movements. This wonderful moon series can be found in the book Yoga for Movement Disorders by Renee LeVerrier. We begin and close the series with a seated crescent moon pose.

Our closing visualization brought us to a beautiful cabin on a lake. It's dusk and the moonlight is reflecting off the lake. As we sit on our porch rocker gazing out at the lake, we acknowledge that the rocking movements and the night sky fill us with peace and contentment. Some members of the class are in the lower age range and some are not. All of them, though, have expressed some interest in maintaining their "balance". I always have a balance pose or two towards the end of the class. They're fully warmed up at this point - and by the time the balance sequence is finished, they are more than ready for relaxation.

Yesterday, though, I decided to have a "balance workshop" where we focused on how there is balance in all our poses. Using a strap for arm stretches, we brought our awareness to both sides of the body - noticing the difference between the arms/shoulders, etc., after spending time on the right - and prior to moving to the left. We then moved to practicing several standing balance poses. Although there is the tendency to worry about being able to stand on one foot, I like to suggest that instead they focus on what part of the pose they "can" do. Can you reach your arms up in a sun salute? Can you bring your right foot back just a little keeping your toes on the ground? Do you feel steady? Are you able to gently move forward? Can you lean on the back of the chair? Breaking down poses step by step seems to be less intimidating and promotes encouragement.

The class as a whole looked beautiful in their balance poses. But, I did suggest a little homework for "practice" and, of course, this brought gales of laughter. "When you're brushing your teeth tonight, try placing your other hand on the vanity and see if you can stand on one foot."

N.Y. Times article - How Yoga Can Wreck Your Body

First off, let me say that I think the title of this article was purely intended for "shock" value - and probably for a little self-promotion. The writer has a book coming out next month on the science of yoga - risks and rewards.

To be sure, there are some yoga classes that are truly not suitable for every body. And, yes, there are some teachers who may be encouraging/urging students to go beyond their current capabilities. With that in mind, the student must be diligent about her own safety. Many poses pose danger for someone not in the best condition - or someone with an injury or other limitation. In my yoga classes, safety is paramount to any posture we do. I talk "safety" throughout the class. "No pain...no pain". "Only go as far as comfortable for you today." "Listen to your body." Unfortunately, we, as a society, put so much emphasis on comparing ourselves to the next guy, winning at all costs, pushing the envelope, etc., that we potentially set ourselves up for failure...or in the case of yoga, a physical injury.

Ultimately, in my view, it is the student's responsibility to tune in to her body - recognize where you are, become aware of what you can do, pay attention and notice what's happening. And, then begin the search for the teacher who recognizes that in you and works with you in that honoring process.

Here's a link to the article in question: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/08/magazine/how-yoga-can-wreck-your-body.html?pagewanted=all

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://takeiteasyyoga.blogspot.com/2012/01/ny-times-article-how-yoga-can-wreck.html' title='N.Y. It's day 6 and I've only completed 2 yoga "sessions". That being said, I decided not to beat myself up about not following through...but rather, to view my yoga practice as just that. It is a practice after all - and sometimes it's not just about the asanas (poses). Judith Lasater had written a book called Living Your Yoga and in this small beautiful volume, she guides the reader with practical suggestions and mantras to enhance your spiritual life. There's a section in the book on discipline and her advice is spot-on: do what you can, go for quality vs quantity, be merciful with yourself. Wow! How many times have we beat ourselves up for something or some perceived shortcoming? And, yet we'd never pass that judgment on to someone else.

So, with that in mind, I am revising my December goal (and taking a passage from the book mentioned above) as follows:

"Inhale quietly and exhale gently, extending the very same kindness to yourself that you would extend to another in the same situation. Begin again."

Season 3 at The Pars

Wow - hard to believe but I'm starting my third season teaching yoga here at The Pars. It's such a lovely group of women - all of whom are interested in improving their health by taking yoga classes. Classes began last week and as the snow birds drift in, the numbers will surely increase. But, even with a small group, it is so gratifying to be able to share this wonderful yoga program with them. And, it was great to be welcomed back with enthusiasm. Currently, they are seeing doctors and trying to determine exactly what the problem is with the back. They are going through examinations and MRI's. They've been prescribed medications and there's talk of potential surgeries. Now, I'm not a doctor. And, I'm not a Physical Therapist. But, I do know that yoga has been found to be beneficial for some people with low back pain. A recent article in the New York Times discusses the latest study that shows practicing yoga on a regular basis can help to relieve the symptoms of low back pain. You can read the full article here.

Now I want to give a "plug" to Peggy Cappy's Yoga for the Rest of Us - Back Care Basics DVD. I ordered two copies of this wonderful DVD for gifts and previewed it today. As with all of Peggy's DVD's, her explanations are clear and easy to follow. The program has six segments which include leg and back stretches for strengthening back muscles. As a bonus, she added restorative poses to help relax and bring comfort to the body. The total time for the DVD is 123 minutes but you can easily choose to do a short session by selecting a specific "scene" from the menu. This is a terrific DVD and if you have back issues - and your doctor has suggested exercises - this may be just what you need!

What I love about October

I follow several "yoga" blogs and get lots of yogic inspiration and ideas there. I'm borrowing a topic from Nadine today. She prepares a list of her favorite things called the "love" list. I'll give you my love list for October - and then you'll want to check out Nadine's list - and her lovely blog: http://nadinesyoga.blogspot.com/.

We recently moved from a house to a condo, so much of what I love about October is unique to this year. And, although I truly had lots going on these past few weeks, stepping on to my mat for even 5 minutes would no doubt have helped with the stress level. Yes, moving is stressful. We sold our home of 24 years and moved to a condo. We had boxes and milk crates filled with our "stuff" and frankly, I'm not sure where my yoga mat was! I did unearth it, though, and from this point forward, I intend to bring my practice back to where it should be...and will be more faithful to the "blog" as well. Today I brought an assortment of ties with me to help with our warm-ups and stretches. We used the ties to begin the warming of our arms and shoulders. Once they were well stretched, we did the cow-face pose. Of course, the image of the cow-face brought lots of laughter into the class.

Using the ties for props enabled the class to go just a little bit further in the poses but I could tell that, for some, this was a bit of a challenge. So, once we put the ties away, I suggested "partner" massage. The timing seemed to be just right and it was obvious from the murmured sounds of oohs and aahs, that this was indeed welcome. Loved the feedback!!!!

An Oldie but a Goodie

A friend had recommended The American Yoga Association's books to me and I purchased Easy Does It Yoga and the Beginner's Manual by Alice Christensen. Although the books were originally published over 30 years ago, there is some valuable information for the practicing yogi and/or teacher.

The author provides a step-by-step yoga "warm-up" sequence that I have found particular helpful with my "seniors" class. For example, in the section on neck stretches, she gives 3 bullets describing the benefits (limbers neck and improves circulation throughout neck region; reduces tension in neck muscles; and limbers cervical spine). She then lists several options for arm positions while doing the exercise. She shows 7 pictures of each neck position and offers several variations of the pose. She completes the instruction with suggested reminders: breathe normally; do not lift your shoulders; move slowly, etc.

The attention to details and the emphasis on being safe and careful make this book a great addition to my yoga library.

Ask and you shall receive...

Since completing my yoga training with Peggy Cappy, I have been volunteering my yoga practice at a local senior center. I've been fortunate to have found a really nice location with wonderful students who come to class on a regular basis. The only problem for me is that it is quite a distance from home. And, this year with skyrocketing gas prices, I considered dropping this class and looking for something a little closer. But, then I thought I would approach the council on aging about being reimbursed for my gas costs. I just asked. And, lo and behold, they have a "friends" group who graciously offered to reimburse me.

The universe provides. I have heard this before...but now was witness to it first-hand.

Smile...

Did I mention my dental surgery in my last post???? Oh, of course I did!!!! Anyway, I am feeling fine and doing well...but do have a swollen right cheek and am a little black and blue around the mouth and chin area. Eeek!

But, I managed to soldier on and taught my Take it Easy Yoga class today in Topsfield. In spite of not being 100%, I could pretty much do everything today...with the exception of that one last "pose". We finished our warm-ups, completed the standing sequence, did a couple of balance postures, and then enjoyed a nice long relaxation. We're seated and our hands are in the "namaste" position. And, now I turn to each one and say..."turn up the corners of your mouth..."

Whoops....June is almost over...

...and I haven't posted anything here yet! Well, I have been busy attending yoga classes and teaching my regular class at the Little Brook Village complex to seniors. Classes are going well and although I am not practicing daily, I am practicing regularly.

But today's post is all about taking it easy. Yes, that's the theme of this blog but there are times when I find myself pushing the envelope. Not today! I had some dental surgery yesterday that left me a little bit weary and a lot swollen. So I decided to put "take it easy yoga" to the test.

My screened-in porch looks out to a beautiful garden. I began by taking a few deep breaths in and out while looking at the flowers in bloom, the small fish pond, and then noticing the squirrels and chipmunks at play. In a few short moments, I was completely relaxed. With hands at the heart, I began to synchronize my breath with movement. The hands push out on inhale, release and open wide on exhale. Close the hands on the next inhale and bring hands to heart on the exhale. From here, I moved into "namaste" circles...going very slowly...noticing my breathing. After a few minutes, I returned to my living room and sat in my little "recliner" for some relaxation/meditation.

Yes, it was just a few hand and arm movements, a little breathing, observing, awareness...but to me, that is what yoga is all about. It's something you can always do - if you have an hour or a few minutes - if you are feeling fit as a fiddle or a little under the weather. Remember, take it easy!

Tim Thomas Does Yoga

Oustanding goalie for the Boston Bruins, Tim Thomas is noted for his flexibility at the net. And, I learned today that he practices yoga to stay on top of his game!!!!

In the summer of 2007, Tim began a yoga-based conditioning program to increase his flexibility and strength. The music is soft and low. The room is hot!!!! Ceiling fans were on but the room is heated for this particular style of yoga. The instructor, Bill, is very knowledgeable and gave assists where needed.

How did I come to this class, you ask? Well, my son, Brendan and I have taken some yoga classes together and he invited me to this one - along with my daughter, Katie. I believe I was the oldest person in the room!!!!! That being said, I was pretty much able to keep up with the flow but found it really challenging. Because the room is heated, and you are moving quickly, you will sweat. Although I had a towel, I found my hands and my feet slipping so I needed to be really careful.

Yes, this was challenge for me but sometimes you really need to give yourself a little push. I wasn't doing a headstand - Brendan was - but I was pretty darn close. And I can think of no better way to spend a Saturday than with my 2 wonderful kids. I have to say at the outset, Lakshmi is an entertainer of the first order! Her class was full of energy - and this woman was a hoot!!!!!

Her contention is that regardless of age, physical ability or current level of activity, your health can be improved by practicing adaptive yoga poses using a chair. During the demo, a student on one side of the stage performed a yoga practice using a mat and no props On the opposite side of the stage, another student did the same practice but she was seated and used modifications. This person represented someone who may have movement disorders or would have some limitations. Lakshmi was in the middle of the stage and demonstrated the full chair practice with no modifications.

I'm always open to new ideas to make my classes fresh and fun. But, this demo was so invigorating - and fast-paced - that I never took a note! Suffice it to say, I had fun and I hope my joy extends to my students as Lakshmi's did for hers. Hey, when I saw "aging with grace", I knew it was meant for me!!!!!

The class was taught by Betty Eiler and if anyone is a picture of aging with grace, it is Betty. At 76 years old, she has a well cared for body - slim and strong. Besides that, she oozes grace in her manner. As my mother would have said, "she has a nice way about her."

Betty studied with B.K.S. Iyengar and the Iyengar style of yoga uses lots of props - and I mean lots! We had bolsters, blankets, straps, blocks, chairs, etc. While I times I found this cumbersome, it surely is a way to help a student achieve a pose that otherwise might be too much of a challenge. In one session, Betty instructed us in how to fashion a strap into a "harness" of sorts. This particular use of the strap was most helpful in keeping shoulders back and down. It's a great tool for improving one's posture.

Yoga with a theme...

Have you heard of Dr. Gott? He's a retired doctor who has an advice column in our local newspaper. Today's question was regarding a new medication for osteoporosis. While he seemed to be on the fence about recommending this new drug, he did have some sage suggestions about making some lifestyle changes to improve your overall bone health. And, of course, regular exercise is highly recommended to prevent bone loss.

What an ideal opening for class today! I brought the newspaper article and Dr. Loren Fishman's book, Yoga for Osteoporosis, with me. First, I gave an overview of Dr. Gott's suggestions. Then I explained that Dr. Fishman suggests 12 daily exercises for improving bone health. We've practiced several of them in the past few months but today we really concentrated on just 4 poses: tree, chair, triangle, downward dog. With emphasis on strengthening our bones, it was amazing how differently we approached the poses. Specifically, tree - which has always been our "go to" balance pose was now a pose for strengthening our legs and arms. The class noticed the difference right away - and I think it brought a new perspective and appreciation for the pose.

Eagle Pose

I was looking at the current issue of Yoga Journal this week and they featured a great in-depth article about the eagle pose. Very cautiously, I decided to introduce it to my class today at The Pars.

We have access to a small library and so, I suggested that we each take a hard-cover book to use as a prop. This piqued the students' curiosity, for sure. What's she going to do with a book? We practiced the arm movements while seated. I told them that later on in the class, we would add the leg movements. So, here's where the book comes in. We placed the book on the floor near our left foot. We then lifted our right leg, crossed at the ankle, and then rested the right toes on top of the book. Voila! This modification made the pose user-friendly for all. I could tell that there was a little anxiety about trying something new - but, what I love about this class, is that they are more than willing to trust and honor their bodies.

Where everybody knows your name...

I've recently attended a wonderful yoga class at a local senior center. Initially, I wandered into the class hoping to pick up a few tips or techniques that I could use in my own classes. But, I found so much more here. The instructor is warm, funny, and very knowledgeable. She makes a point of spending a few minutes with new students. During the hour long class, she mentions just about everyone by name - how's your shoulder today, Marie? - that looks good, Dennis - try to get your arm up a little more, Dorothy - and so on.

Although her class generally has at least 20 people in attendance, you feel as if she knows you. And, don't we all love it when someone remembers our name? And, as your name is used, other people pick up on it and get to know you, too. It's a yoga class, alright, but it kind of reminds me of Cheers...and I think I'm becoming a regular.

Another generation of yoginis...

I was scrolling around the web and found these cards. Bruised would be more like it. Yes, right now I am suffering through a minor injury sustained in a boating accident about a month ago. Rereading that sentence right now made me realize how melodramatic I can be! The boating accident is a result of me trying to climb into the boat! Slip, slam, boom. My right arm, shoulder hit the side of the metal boat with such force that I'm still - a month later - unable to raise my right arm all the way up.

This presents a slight challenge for me in doing my daily yoga vs osteoporosis exercises. But, as I tell my students, just do what you can do from where you are today. So, I've managed to keep my commitment - albeit with the use of many props, lots of deep breaths and patience with myself.

Easy Yoga for Arthritis

I recently renewed my membership with WGBH (our Public Broadcasting System station) and as a bonus, received this wonderful DVD called Easy Yoga for Arthritis. This is Peggy Cappy's most recent DVD and I have to say I think it's far and away her best! She includes some wonderful warm-ups that not only would be helpful for people with arthritis but would also benefit those who would be looking to maintain more flexibility, particularly in their hands and feet. Her instructions are clear and she has a beautifully modulated voice - which I really enjoyed listening to during the relaxation and meditation sections.

This DVD is currently offered exclusively as a pledge gift through public broadcasting stations nationwide. It's expected to be available from Peggy Cappy's website early November. Keep an eye out for it. You won't be disappointed!

Add a spiritual component to your practice

In Victoria Moran's book, Younger by the Day: 365 Ways to Rejuvenate your Body and Revitalize your Spirit, she offers some great suggestions for improving your spiritual health. As I mentioned then, my mother was in the hospital and we were practicing relaxation techniques. It wasn't a week later that my dear mother died. She was not in pain and I am so grateful that she truly didn't suffer. She remained calm throughout the last stages of her life and exhibited a bravery and a faith that will stay with me forever. As I reflect on these last few weeks, I have come to the conclusion that only by staying in the present moment was I fortunate enough to witness the abundance of love between a mother and child.

Mountaintop Visualization

My mother is currently hospitalized and not surprisingly, is somewhat stressed and anxious about what is happening now - and what is happening next. Rather than the usual peaceful beach scene, you are heading to the mountains for a short stay in a friend's log cabin. In this cabin, you feel warm and perfectly safe. You walk in and immediately note the crackling fire in the fireplace. Warmth is radiating out to you. You hear the wood making its soft sounds. You begin to feel a little less stressed and start to relax. You put your bag down and begin to take a look around the cabin.

A wonderful aroma is eminating out from the kitchen. You walk in and see a crock pot on the counter. Your friend has left you a note. Dinner will be ready in an hour. You peek in and see that it's your favorite meal - a hearty beef stew. Mmmmmm...that smells so good!

You look around the country kitchen. Your sense of smell is on high alert now. Something has been baking in the oven. The aroma is coming from a counter near the slightly open window. You see that there's an apple pie set out. It's cooling for later.

There's a sense of peace and contentment around you right now. You slowly return to the living room. In front of the fireplace is an overstuffed chair with matching ottoman. You sit down and sink into the chair where the comfortable cushions wrap around you. You are completely relaxed now. You are in a special place - you are safe and cared for - and all of your troubles are far, far away.

Ahhhhhhhhhh!

Making Progress

It's been just over a month now that I've been a member of the Yoga vs Osteoporosis study. Members have a list of 12 exercises to perform and we keep track with a two-week scorecard. I can honestly say that I've been diligent in completing this assignment - haven't missed a day yet. But, here's what I've learned so far: You can do the exercises each day. However, when you do the exercises and stay focused, in the moment, and fully put all of your energy and desire in what you are doing, you really notice the difference. I'll give you an example.

Let's say you are performing tree pose. You've been doing tree pose for years now. You can do it in your sleep. But...when you are doing tree pose with the intention of improving your bone health, when you squeeze the muscles in your upper legs, lengthen your pelvis down and lift your abdomen up, push your raised foot and inner leg against each other, when you reach your arms up and stretch out in all directions, when you hold that pose, you then become that strong, majestic tree. And, that's the difference.

Yoga - off the mat - in the car

After a minor mishap with my car earlier this week (I ran over a "blob" of tar and my tire was covered in it!), I realized that I need to pay closer attention when I'm driving. Awareness, noticing, breathing - are all vital parts of my yoga practice on the mat. So, as I was en route to my gentle yoga class this morning, I thought "why not bring your yoga to your driving"? I put my seat belt on, turned the radio off, elongated my spine, steadied my gaze, and began driving. All is well, I thought, and I gently inhaled and exhaled.

Then, I glanced in my rearview mirror and allofasudden, there is a huge trailer truck practically in my back seat!!!! Breathe, I thought, stay calm, notice what you are doing. I glance again and he's still on my tail. Nearing my exit, I put my directional signal on and bear off the ramp. The truck zooms past me. I slowly exhale.

In the past, this type of incident would have brought on some anxiety for me. But now, I realize that becoming aware of my breathing truly helps to calm my mind. Toot! Toot!

Yoga for the Rest of Us - Teacher Training

Last week I had the good fortune to attend Peggy Cappy's "Yoga for the Rest of Us" teacher training. This was the second time around for me as I was a student in the 2009 class. I joked with Peggy when I arrived that I was there for remedial training - and in a way, I was. I learned so much last year and was able to put that training to good use with my class in Topsfield as well as the class in Naples, Florida. But, there's always room for improvement. I was eager to meet new yogis/yoginis and to observe different styles of teaching. We had a super group this year - all warm and welcoming - and highly motivated. It was wonderful for me to reconnect with Carol, Pat, and Linda from the class of 2009. They've all been so helpful and supportive to me this past year.

Peggy, as always, was an absolute delight and just so inspring. See for yourself - there's a photo of her on the right doing a very elegant split!!!!

It was a full week of activities, student teachings, observations, etc. One of the highlights of the week for me was watching an iMovie that was created by Ellie, our class photographer. I know I won't be able to do it justice with my description, but suffice to say this movie summed up just what yoga for the rest of us is all about. She had photos of a number of people from her yoga class - all shapes and sizes. Accompanied by music, smiles, and beautiful captions, I found it very moving.

I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to attend this training. Once again, I am re-motivated to be the best yoga teacher I can be.

~Namaste!

Progress Report - Yoga vs Osteoporosis Study

It's only been a couple of weeks but I just wanted to post my progress.

Study participants are required to perform a set of exercises daily - or at least most days of the week. I joined the study on June 10 and can report that I have completed the routine each day for the last 17 days. We have a scorecard and that really helps to keep record. And, people have always believed that the moon is something mysterious and magical. I downloaded Van Morrison's "It's a Marvelous Night for a Moon Dance" (actually used the Michael Buble version) on my iPod for background music. We did a moon series of poses from Yoga for Movement Disorders. This was one time where I wish I had my camera with me. The class looked like synchronized swimmers - beautiful!!!! Having worked in a Social Security office for many years, I can certainly empathize with the stresses these workers deal with on a daily basis. And, I had forgotten how stressful the morning commute could be! That being said, I was welcomed ever so graciously by everyone and enjoyed this mini yoga session.

We began with the Lion Pose - a stress-reliever if I ever saw one! This pose "broke the ice" so to speak and we proceeded with some breathing techniques. From there, we warmed up the body. Working hunched over at a desk and staring at a computer screen for hours at a time can wreak havoc on a body. The class responded well to the warm-ups and can do these at their desk in just a few short minutes.

As the folks were dressed for work - and not working out - I geared the poses to standing only. We practiced Mountain, Chair, and then Downward Dog using the chair for support.

We closed with a nice relaxation exercise. One of the women in the class is from Barbados and is getting married there next month. I used the beach in Barbados theme for the relaxation and played some steel band music.

As with all new experiences, I was a little nervous at the start. But, that soon disappeared when I looked at the relaxed smiling faces around me. Especially Brendan's.

Self-Acceptance

I'm preparing a class for some office workers and so, last night I spent some time reading from a delightful book called Desktop Yoga by Julie Lusk. This book was printed about 12 years ago but it is still a timely resource. It offers some clear, easy explanations of various yoga poses that can be done while seated at a desk.

In one chapter, entitled Twelve Yoga Secrets for Managing Stress, I found a message that seemed to be meant for me! Regarding self-acceptance, Lusk says "It is not helpful to be either critical or complimentary toward your ability to do yoga. It is much more important to accept yourself for who and how you are. Being yourself is enough. It is a lot less stressful if you are able to stop putting yourself down all the time..." (See yesterday's post) It really doesn't matter that I'm not as flexible as Gumby. What is much more important is that I accept myself - as is!

Coordination Conundrum

Take a look at the pose on the left. Looks relatively easy to do, doesn't it? But, for some reason or other, I'm having difficulty with my coordination - or lack of it.

First, my left arm doesn't quite reach the floor. I tried using 2 blocks and this seems to help. I may need the chair for this one.

Second, I think I'm just a little nervous. Sure looks like you could twist and shout if you're not paying close attention!!!!

The funny thing is that I know once I get the hang of it, I will come to like - no, maybe even love it!!!! At least that's been my experience with poses that just seemed too confusing for me.

Motivated...and accountable!

Not too long ago, Pat from the Yoga Librarian Blog posted a hearty recommendation for the book shown on the left. I have osteoporosis and I practice yoga. And so, of course, I bought the book and have been studying it ever since. This book is chock full of solid medical information, detailed descriptions of poses, and promise.

At http://www.sciatica.org/, I learned that there was a study in place which "attempts to prove that properly chosen yoga poses can reverse osteoporosis without having negative effects on the joints." Participants in the study received a DVD which demonstrated these poses. I sent an email to the organization with the hope of being able to purchase the DVD - and received a reply inviting me to join the study! And so, this is where the motivation kicks in...

The folks involved with the study are most responsive and helpful. Using the book as my guide, I began the exercises on June 10. I just received the DVD and this has helped me to fine-tune a couple of the poses. As a member of the study, I am making a commitment to do these exercises daily. I am keeping a log and have just completed week 1. I'll try to post regularly now so that I can keep track of my progress here. All about accountability!!!

"If you build it, they will come"

Here's a photo of the entrance to the condo complex called "The Pars" where we're renting a unit for January and February. It really is that beautiful - maybe even more so. Anyway, we arrived here on January 2 and it's felt like "home" ever since. We were welcomed from day one by so many friendly people! And, there are lots of activities ~ bocce, exercise, book club, line dancing, parties, dinners, etc. I noticed something missing, though, and that was YOGA!!!!! So, I found out the name of the woman in charge and promptly called her to offer my services. She agreed to introduce me at the next exercise group and see if there would be any interest in yoga classes. Any interest????? Wow!!!! People were excited about this and the first class that I taught had over 30 people in attendance. I guess they like it because it's been packed ever since. It kind of reminds me of the famous saying in that movie, Field of Dreams: "If you build it, they will come."

How I Celebrated the Winter Solstice

Today we celebrate the Winter Solstice which is considered to be the shortest day of the year. Yes, it's the time of year when the days are short and the nights are long. But, it also marks the beginning of the return of the sun. Each day from now on means a little more sunshine for us. Longer daylight hours mean an increase in positive energy. I sure hope so since we just recently had a snow storm here, lost power for a bit, and in general, everything looks pretty gray and funky out there! But, that being said, I decided to practice sun salutations this morning in an effort to get myself in a positive position!

Double Tree

In just about every yoga class I have taught - or attended - we practice some balance poses. The one you are probably most familiar with is the "tree" pose. In "tree", the standing leg is firmly rooted on the ground. Bending your other leg at the knee, slowly raise the foot so that it is pressing against the standing leg's inner thigh. Press the knee back to help open the hips. When you are ready, your hands come together in Namaste position. Then slowly raise your arms up and balance.

The fun begins with "double tree" pose...otherwise known as "partner tree". Paul has been practicing yoga with me pretty regularly now and is becoming quite limber and flexible. He doesn't think so...but he's really improved a lot! The picture above shows two "tree huggers" doing the partner tree pose. We've included this pose in our practice and find it's really helped with our balance. We sometimes end up wobbling a little, though, then laughing a lot!

Keeping track...

Earlier this month I decided to set a goal regarding my yoga practice and study. I've been keeping a log where I list the amount of time I practice yoga along with a short description of postures. This can be either at home, my personal practice, or in a class. I'm also logging the amount of time I spend reading or studying yoga, and including any special training or seminars that I complete as well. They say that goals are usually more effective when they are specific. And I find that if I write something down, and I can see it in black and white, I'm more apt to stick to it. Keeping track of your progress allows you to give yourself a pat on the back and, in turn, helps to keep you motivated.

So, my initial goal is to reach 200 hours of practice/self study in one year. As much as I try to do something along these lines every day, it doesn't always happen. Regardless, I am pretty faithful to my practice and here are the results:

Personal practice: 12 1/2 hours

Self-study: 10 hours

Seminar/training: 5 hours

Total for November: 27 1/2 hours

Partner Assisted Yoga

At a recent yoga class, the instructor had the students pair up to do some partner assisted stretching of the hamstring muscles. While I have no problem - and actually welcome - "assists" from the teacher, I am a little nervous about having another student work on me...and vice versa. My partner was a tall, young woman who was probably somewhat stronger than me. While I was in the reclining position, my partner was to take my outstretched leg and gently guide it towards my head. Which she did - and by no means am I faulting her. But, my leg was shaking (no, make that trembling) and although it didn't hurt, I'm always concerned about going "over my edge" and injuring myself.

Anyway, I'm just wondering here how other yoginis feel about working with partners.

Moonbeam - a ray of light from the moon...

What, you ask, does the title of this post have to do with yoga? Well, actually, a lot. I used a "Moon Series" of poses taken from Yoga for Movement Disorders in my class this week. Moon poses are similar to the seated sun salutations that we have been doing in that the poses are done in a continuous flowing sequence. Although there are many variations on the moon series, this particular version suited our class well.

Moon series - seated variation:

1. Seated mountain pose

2. Crescent moon

3. Goddess

4. Seated Forward Bend with Twist

5. Seated Hamstring Stretch

6. Goddess

7. Crescent moon

Yoga Teacher Training - Students w/Parkinson's Disease

On Saturday, I had the privilege of attending a program sponsored by the Mass Chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association. This was a training class for yoga teachers who may have students with Parkinson's Disease. I thought this would be a great opportunity for me to educate myself about this particular disease - as well as to learn about some strategies for modifying my yoga class to help guide students who may have this or other movement disorders.

The training began with a yoga practice led by Renee LeVerrier, RYT, and author of Yoga for Movement Disorders. We began the class with some breathing exercises and Renee later explained that she spends a lot of time in her classes "cueing" and "counting" so that movement is coordinated with the breath. We "warmed-up" and proceeded to several seated poses for stretching. The standing segment included a lot of movement with music. In a pose called "willow" you begin by standing and then twisting from side to side keeping your arms loose by your sides. You are shifting your weight from left to right - when moving to the right, you lift your left heel off the ground - and then do the same on the opposite side. You could have a lot of fun with this pose by varying your arm and hand movements.

In Renee's classes, relaxation is a treat not to be missed! She says that she uses every prop available which would include pillows for your head, eye pillows, blankets, bolsters, you name it! Having attended one of her classes, I can attest to the fact that I was comfy, cozy in a "nest" of blankets and utterly relaxed.

After the yoga practice, we were given an overview of Parkinson's Disease by Cathi Thomas, MS, RN. She had an excellent slide presentation called "Sharing Hope in Parkinson's Disease". She also emphasized that patients have found yoga quite helpful in improving their quality of life. Tami DeAngelis, PT, MSPT, GCS, outlined the links between physical therapy, yoga and activities of daily living for those with the disease. Tami also provided some practical considerations for teachers. Consider the time of day when classes are scheduled. Early in the day may be difficult. Students could be stiff and medications may not have taken effect yet. Try to involve care partners in the program.

Included in the training packet was a DVD title "Exercise Ideas for People Living with Parkinson's Disease. This DVD featured a 77 year old, Bill Hillman, with the disease. Mr. Hillman devised a personal exercise program using items commonly found at home. We also received a book called Be Active which is an exercise manual put out by the American Parkinson Disease Association and a book titled Parkinson's Disease and the Art of Moving by John Argue.

This was a wonderful seminar!

Let's Make A Deal!

Today, one of my students asked me if she should be doing yoga every day. We got to talking and I explained to her that it is my goal to have a daily practice - but, sometimes "life" gets in the way and I don't always practice what I preach. On our way out from class, we discussed the benefits of a daily practice and decided to make a pact. We would each practice 2 poses - just 2 to start - daily for the next 2 weeks. We decided to do Mountain Pose and Downward Dog every day. Just spending part of each day doing these 2 poses is certainly doable - and now we're "accountable", too. Thanks, Fran! This was just the motivation I needed today.

Easy Does It Yoga Class

On Friday I had a little daytrip for myself and it all began in Rose Russo's "Easy Does It" yoga class in Newburyport. Rose is a kind and gentle teacher and a Reika master as well. After spending a few minutes with her, you could almost sense that she was a healer. She made me feel welcome from the start. Although the class is called "easy does it", it's not as easy as you think. It's important to remember that your body may not be in the "easy" place today. But, no matter...you start where you are and go from there. We did several standing poses using the wall as an assist. The wall provides a lot of stability and acts like a security blanket if you're feeling shaky. This was a timely experience for me as I've been neglecting my practice of late. Sometimes you just need a little (gentle) push in the right direction and that's just what I found in this class. :)

Starting Over

We've just returned from an action-packed week travelling to New York City and Washington, D.C. We saw several shows, did lots of sightseeing, had fabulous dinners out, and walked, walked, walked!!!! Of course, I had every good intention of keeping up my daily yoga practice on this vacation...but this was not to be! I could tell you that I was busy - or tired - or pressed for time -and that would all be the truth. Regardless, I didn't practice and now I must start over.

So, today, I began with warm-ups and gently urged my body to open and respond. From there, I practiced standing and balancing poses. I can balance for a few moments now and realize that I'm not where I used to be...and that's ok. From here, I practiced sun salutations - slowly, deliberately, mindfully. Even now as I write this, I consciously just brought my shoulders back and sat up straighter. It was the "dowager's hump" that had me in a state. But a recent article published by Reuters News Service indicates that yoga may decrease this age-related curve of the upper spine. A small study was conducted by Dr. Gail Greendale (UCLA) where a group of elderly study participants did yoga for 6 months and the results were compared to a group who did no yoga. The yoga group saw their upper spine curve lowered by about 5 percent. The yoga group met 3 days a week for 6 months. During their yoga classes, they used breathing techniques and did poses to increase flexibility and strength in their back muscles. Granted, this was a very small study with only about 120 participants in all. However, it is just one example of the benefits of a regular yoga practice...and another reason to spread the word to our senior population.

Seated Sun Salutations

Peggy Cappy introduced me to a Sun Salutation version that can be done entirely while seated in a chair. We started off slowly and did the poses in incremental steps. Lift your arms up and kiss the sun. Arms out to the side and bow to the earth. It's not an easy pose for those with balance issues. We use a chair and do the pose in stages. Stage one has one leg rooted on the ground while lifting the heel only of the other leg. From there, we may lift the heel and toes for just a few seconds. When they are ready, the leg comes up - but we're still holding on to the chair for support. Often, one or two students will take their arms up and start to wobble. I tell them not to worry about swaying because "trees sway" and for some reason or other, that always cracks them up. They start to laugh and lose their balance! Up again! Down again! All the while smiling!

What a treat for me - they enjoy yoga!

Random Yoga Thoughts...

I need to fit short yoga practices in throughout my day.

And keeping a yoga journal would help.

Yoga postures definitely do a lot to relieve stress.

As does massage.

And add meditation here, too.

But relaxing my mind is a real challenge for me.

The library has a variety of yoga books, tapes, DVD's.

And, I'm building my own mini yoga library.

Yoga Mind & Body: Ali MacGraw is still one of the best tapes, though.

The "pretty room" is where I practice yoga at home.

It's not fancy but there's a sense of serenity there for me.

Honor your body - love that phrase!

Another one - It's a practice; not a perfect!

And, how about downward dog being called the Mother Superior of all poses?

Green Tea Yoga Studio

Today I had the pleasure of attending a class in Core Yoga offered by Green Tea Yoga Studio. The studio itself is quite beautiful and clean. There were plenty of mats, blocks, straps, etc. My instructor, Elaine, has been practicing yoga since the 70's and teaching full-time since 1994. I arrived at class somewhat early and had a chance to chat with Elaine for a few minutes before the start. She told me that she focuses on the anatomy to help the students find the wisdom in their own bodies. And, so, in the class, we concentrated on finding our core and using it for support and for strength. Elaine was soft-spoken and gentle; she played soft music throughout the class. She asked permission to make hands-on adjustments and I was particularly grateful for that. I think I've found my "home" base. It was Churchill's intent that a genuine yoga practice is there for those who search for it. Her search, along with Rosen, took them from New York City and Woodstock to Hawaii and the great subcontinent of India.

"This simultaneously tongue-in-cheek and reverential docu will entertain the unenlightened without alienating the faithful" (Ronnie Scheib, Variety). I thoroughly agree. The film was a treat to watch and was filled with humor and passion. At one point, Rosen meets with Dr. Madan Kataria, the laughter yoga "guru". Rosen finds himself laughing at the laughter and asks Dr. Kataria how laughter yoga could possibly be considered spiritual. Kataria replies that laughter lifts your spirits. I visited the site last week so I could get a feel for the room. It's large with long lunchroom type tables and folding chairs. There are windows and the room was well lit. There was a corner table where I could stash my stuff and electricity was available for my mini boom box. So, today I arrived about a half hour early and met with the Director of the COA. Lydia was excited to have the yoga class up and running and helped me set up the room.

The students trickled in and I greeted them individually. Soon a young man walked in and he was carrying a large camera! Lydia wanted to publicize the class and explained that this fellow is from the local newspaper. (Had I known he'd be there for the entire class, I would have "dolled up" a little bit!!) Anyway, there were 10 people in all and none of them had any past experience with yoga - which was a good thing! I could then start with the basics - which I did - and they were enthusiastic and seemed to enjoy it.

I was a little nervous at the beginning of the class and I guess that's to be expected. But, I was really happy with the way it turned out and I think this is going to be a wonderful experience for me.

Moving Mountains

Take a look at the picture on the left of a woman in Mountain Pose. The body is in perfect balance and her posture is beautiful. I do this pose frequently and feel the difference it makes in my posture.

The other night I wanted to observe myself doing this pose step by step. So, in front of a mirror, I turned sideways so that I could properly check my alignment. I planted my feet and then firmed up my thighs. At this point, I glanced in the mirror. I then tilted my pelvis and gently brought my shoulders back and down. Wow! These two subtle movements made a huge difference in my alignment. Although I seldom practice in front of a mirror, I recommend checking yourself from time to time. You'll be pleased with the results. :)

Restorative Yoga

Everyone has an occasional sleepness night. Mine was on Saturday night and so when I got up on Sunday morning, I was really fatigued - and crabby. And, I just didn't have enough energy to unroll my mat and begin to practice. Then, I remembered reading about restorative yoga in Yoga for Life by Alan Finger. Restorative yoga can help you if you have injuries, physical limitations, or if you are just plain tired, like me. The postures are held for longer periods of time and this, in turn, gives the body what it needs to relax and heal. He suggests a sequence of 4 poses and recommends using several props such as folded blankets, blocks, etc., so that there is less strain on the body.

I concentrated on Viparita Karani (Legs up the wall pose) since I find this most relaxing and beneficial for me. In Finger's book, he tells us that "By doing this simple inversion, you redirect the blood flow in the body and remove some of the pressure that builds up in the legs and feet. This simple reversal can be powerfully rejuvenating."

An eyebag over my eyes increased the feeling of relaxation and my spirits were much improved!

Poetry in Motion

Take a look at this beautiful candle holder demonstrating the Upward Facing Dog pose! We were told to select a card, keep it face down until everyone had a card, and then together, we would turn the card over. Each card had one word on it and we then had to use that word as often as we could during that day. On two out of four days, my word was light. Now, what could be the meaning of that, I asked? But, here it is several weeks later and I find myself seeing light everywhere. There's moonlight, sunlight, daylight, and I've been told to lighten up and I'd be sure to see the light at the end of the tunnel!

Here's an affirmation, though, that makes great use of the word:

"The light within me is healing my entire body." Sounds like a plan.

A trip to Bermuda...in your mind

I'm thinking of using a beach in Bermuda as a visualization when doing final relaxation. One look at this picture and I am totally relaxed!!!! And, if I think about it, I can recall the pink sand, soft as a pillow - I can see the clear blue sky - I can feel the warm ocean breeze - I hear the sounds of the tide coming in - the tide going out...and in the background, I'm listening to the tinkling music of a steel band. What is amazing about relaxation exercises is that you can truly experience all of the sensations if you just "let go". Of course, this is easier said than done...but that's why it's called a practice!!!!

Where does the time go?????

For some reason or other, time gets away from me. Here it is a Sunday night - a day of rest, mind you - and I barely had 5 minutes to sit down!!!! But, I did manage a mini yoga session early this morning. That seems to be the best time of day for me to do yoga. It's before breakfast and the "to do" list and I'm not as tired as I am at the end of the day. So, this morning I did some warm-ups, some balance poses, and a nice circular flow that I found in Renee LeVerrier's book, Yoga for Movement Disorders. I finished up with a shoulder stand and then relaxed with "legs up the wall" pose. Haha - seriously, I gave a mini-demo to my sister, and then had my mother over for a full hour class. Mom was quite the good student and very eager to "do it right" - and, believe me, I kept telling her that she was doing just fine. But, here the teacher was a student, too, as I learned from this class with my mother. There were some movements that I thought would be relatively simple for her (wrist circles) and yet this was somewhat confusing - and there were some balance poses that I initially thought would be too challenging - and she did them with ease.

So, this was a real learning experience for me and I really appreciate the opportunity to test drive my teaching. It also helped to time this class as I wanted to make sure I could comfortably fill an hour. And, it goes without saying, my mother thought I was fabulous!!!!

Yoga Teacher Training

I recently completed the Yoga Teacher Training offered by Peggy Cappy in Peterborough, NH. What a wonderful experience! I met so many beautiful people and learned so much! The highlight of this training for me was observing Peggy's gentle yoga class in action. This particular class of seniors has been meeting every Tuesday morning for over 20 years! I was so impressed by the agility and enthusiasm of this group. Watching them perform sun salutations was like watching a beautiful ballet.

Speaking of agility, I'd like to introduce one of my classmates - Linda - from Washington, DC. Here she is performing a split:

Wow! Isn't she something!!!!! Well, I'm certainly not "there" yet - but, one day...

How this all got started...

When we were in Florida last year, I started regularly attending yoga classes at the Joyful Yoga studio. And, although I have practiced yoga (off and on) for probably the past 15 years or so, this particular yoga class really stimulated my interest once again. The emphasis was on "practice" - not perfect. And, the instructors were kind, gentle and patient. My goal then - as now - was to develop a daily practice. So, I had to shift my perspective a little bit and break out of my routine. Even if I only have 10 minutes to spare, I can use that 10 minutes to improve my overall well-being with my daily yoga practice.
